Hoodia Gordonii

Portion control and suppression of that seemingly insatiable hungry feeling are two major components of any weight loss program. Luckily for anyone trying to shed some weight these days, there’s Hoodia Gordonii, a natural succulent plant (that looks very much like a cactus) from the Kalahari Desert of South Africa.

While Hoodia Gordonii is found in many diet and weight loss supplements these days, it is used for its appetite suppressing qualities. Its popularity stems from the fact that Hoodia Gordonii is all-natural and not stimulant-based. Therefore, it is not associated with any adverse side-effects like a racing heart or the jitters produced by some ingredients in stimulant-based weight-loss supplements. Because it occurs naturally, it is believed to be safe for anyone talking Hoodia Gordonii.

Hoodia Gordonii has been used for centuries as a way to ward off hunger and thirst for more than 100,000 years. It was first discovered by the native Bushmen in South Africa. The P57 molecule of the Hoodia Gordonii plant affects the hunger center of the brain which is contained in the Hypothalamus. Injections of the P57 molecule into the appetite center of rat brains resulted in altered levels of ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate), an energy molecule thought to have an effect on hunger. Hoodia Gordonii apparently tricks the brain into thinking you’ve eaten. It does so by mimicking the effects of glucose on the receptors in the brain which then makes you feel full.

Key results of Hoodia Gordonii that have been reported are a reduced interest in food, delay in the time hunger sets in after eating, feeling full more quickly and a general feeling of well-being. As stated, there have been no negative effects found, but there are a few things to keep in mind when consuming any products containing Hoodia Gordonii. Because Hoodia Gordonii suppresses hunger and thirst, dehydration could become a concern. Be mindful that you are drinking enough to keep your body hydrated and satisfied. As with the safest supplements, there is always someone who may have an unlucky adverse reaction to the ingredients.
